Your Broward County Commissioner

Meet Beam Furr

Educator, Community Advocate, Commissioner

Beam Furr has proudly served on the Broward County Commission since 2014.

Beam grew up in Hallandale, went to South Broward High, and has lived in Hollywood for most of his life. Prior to becoming a county commissioner, he taught social studies and was a librarian for Broward County Public Schools.

Like most teachers, Beam recognized that students face a litany of issues that affect their lives and learning. He couldn’t ignore the problems his community faced beyond the walls of the school. Beam joined the local civic association and began to write grants for impoverished neighborhoods to address the issues that would improve the quality of life and attract young families to the area. Commissioners in the City of Hollywood took notice of his efforts and worked with him to amplify these efforts.

After the success of Beam’s volunteerism to improve his city, he was strongly encouraged by sitting commissioners and other community leaders to run for the Hollywood City Commission. In 2000, he won his election to become a Commissioner for Hollywood’s District 2, where he served for 12 years.

Throughout his tenure on the City Commission, Beam focused on bringing much needed resources to the community, rehabilitating homes and neighborhoods, making the city safer, and improving the city’s infrastructure. His successes brought attention from across Broward County, and he was encouraged to run for the County Commission to continue his work to improve the community.
